2nd Educational Conference of CYCERE “Education for the Environment and the Sustainability of the Earth”

The educational conference organized by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CYCERE), having as subject “Education for the Environment and the Sustainability of the Earth”, was characterized by great success. At the conference, held on Saturday, 14, 2011 at the Conference Hall of the Holy Church of Limassol, eminent personalities gave a speech including the Dr. Mappouras Inspector of Science-Biology as well as the Chairman of the Annex PEEKPE Athens, Mr. George Farangitakis. More than 300 participants attended the educational conference, especially teachers, school directors and inspectors.

Some of the most interesting conclusions of the conference are that the Centers for Environmental Education have the ability to contribute greatly into the formation of positive attitudes towards the environment and that CYCERE’s environmental education programs are really successful as they serve this aim. In addition, the conference revealed that in an era that strong economic and residential development are both emphasized, the focus of environmental education should be on the education for the sustainability of Earth. It was also stressed that the next generation of environmental education programs should serve this objective. Finally, the contribution of the International Environmental Education Program “Earthkeepers”, that for the first time is offered by CYCERE in the Greek-speaking world, was also highlighted, as is a program that focuses on the education for the sustainability of the earth.

At the end of the educational conference, participation certificates were shared to the directors of the schools that participated in the environmental education programs of the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education as well as to the students that completed their training and became the first Earthkeepers of Cyprus. It is worth mentioning that within a few months hundreds of students and dozens of teachers have participated with success in the environmental education programs of the CYCERE which are provided free of charge.
