PANCYPRIAN ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS
FOR ORGANIZATIONS & COMPANIES
AND PANCYPRIAN AWARDS GREEN CITIES &
GREEN COMMUNITIES OF CYPRUS 2019
The Award Ceremony of the “Pancyprian Awards Green Cities & Green Communities of Cyprus” and the “Pancyprian Environmental Awards for Organizations & Companies” was held today, February 24, 2020 at the Presidential Palace.
The awards were presented by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis.
In particular, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Costas Kadis, awarded on behalf of the President of the Republic to all Green Municipalities and Green Communities of Cyprus the Green Flag which will be waving tomorrow outside the City Halls and Municipalities and Communities and to all the awarded Organizations and Companies the Honorary Medals.
The Pancyprian Awards Green Cities & Green Communities of Cyprus were established on the initiative of the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education CYCERE of the Holy Diocese of Limassol in collaboration with the Commissioner for Environment Mrs. Klelia Vasileiou, the Union of Municipalities of Cyprus and the Union of Communities of Cyprus. The awards were also supported by participating in the Scientific Evaluation Committee of TEPAK, ETEK and the Cyprus Citizens’ Energy Office.
The Pancyprian Environmental Awards for Organizations & Companies were established on the initiative of the Cyprus Environmental Research and Training Center CYCERE of the Holy Diocese of Limassol in collaboration with the Environment Commissioner Ms. Klelia Vasileiou, the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), the Federation of Employers & Industrialists, the Cyprus Tourism Business Association, the Cyprus Organization of Women Entrepreneurs of Limassol, and the Together Volunteer Network.
For the year 2019, 13 Green Municipalities and 6 Green Communities of Cyprus are awarded for their environmental projects and a total of 16 Organizations and Companies.
Specifically, the following 16 Organizations and Companies are awarded with the Honorary Medal of Environmental Protector:

With their award, the Green Cities and Communities of Cyprus are automatically included in the Network of Green Cities and Green Communities of Cyprus created and coordinated by CYCERE.
The Special Honor Distinction, the “Golden Mouflon “ for 2019 and the title of the Green Capital of Cyprus for 2019 was awarded to the Community of Pissouri for its work “Mapping of Cycling routes and hiking routes of the wider area of Pissouri”, Category: Sustainable Tourism, which garnered the highest score of all the candidate projects in all Categories.
Regarding the Pancyprian Environmental Awards for Organizations & Companies, the Special Golden Honorary Distinction of the awards was given to the VASSILIKO CEMENT WORKS PUBLIC COMPANY LTD, as the organization that collected the highest score.
The President of the Republic noted in his greeting read by the Minister of Environment that with a series of projects and measures the environmental policy of the government is being implemented. It was also mentioned that with the establishment of these Pancyprian Environmental Awards, another incentive is given to the Local Authorities and we promote our Municipalities and Communities that undertake and carry out green projects for their citizens. He also noted that the Green City Awards & Green Communities of Cyprus can benefit in various ways our Municipalities and Communities, improving the quality of life of citizens, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development. He also said, “The initiative we have developed to tackle Climate Change in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, through the formulation of a scientifically valid Action Plan, specifically tailored to the specifics of our region.” The President of the Republic also congratulated the Organizations and Companies that were awarded for their environmental work.
Environment Commissioner Klelia Vasileiou point out the need for all of us to take part in the response to climate change, because, as she said, in addition to any government policies and actions, we have a personal responsibility as active citizens.
The Scientific Director of CYCERE Dr. Andreas Hatzichampis, referred to the importance and goals of the Pancyprian Environmental Awards, to the creation of the Network of Green Cities and Communities of Cyprus created and coordinated by the CYCERE and with these awards the Cypriot cities are gradual prepared for the European Green Capital of Europe Award. Finally, he thanked the Environment Commissioner Ms. Klelia Vasileiou and the former Environment Commissioner Ms. Ioanna Panagiotou as well as the President of the Republic who embraced this institution as well as all the collaborating bodies and the winners.
