Urban gardens: Green corners in our city – Introduction

CYCERE establishes the new Environmental Education Program “Urban gardens: Green corners in our city” aiming at the development, improvement, environmental upgrading and educational use of gardens in schools and towns.

Through this program, the cultivation of research skills through in situs observations, the conceptual understanding and the environmental awareness of students are promoted with the development and maintenance of urban garden through a holistic approach and experiential learning. Furthermore, after students identify the great value of urban gardens providing an escape from the anthropogenic overcrowded environment of modern cities, they realise the need for protecting and conserving them.        

The methodological approaches followed are intertwined with the principles and philosophy of Environmental Education and the Education for Sustainability also promoting team work and collaboration. The program also encourages the collaboration amongst students, teachers, parents and the local community as for the development and maintenance of the urban garden to be achieved.
