1st Pancyprian Student Conference for the Environment and Sustainability

The 1st Pancyprian Student Conference for the Environment and Sustainability was held with a great success at the Events Hall of the Holy Bishopry of Limassol on Saturday the 21st of March from 8:00 to 13:00. The Conference was under the sponsorship of the Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Kostas Kadis.

During the Conference, 72 student groups from more than 60 Gymnasia and Lyceums of all around Cyprus presented their environmental projects designed and produced during the academic year 2014-2015 in the form of a scientific project and oral announcements. More than 500 students and 105 teachers participated at the Conference. The projects were placed under 14 thematic units: Sustainable living, Wastes, Urban development, Biodiversity, Forests, Energy, Climate change, Transportation means, Water, Production and Consumption, Environment and Culture, Environment and Health, Tourism, Poverty.

The Conference was organized by the Inspection of Naturalism / Biology / Geography of the Secondary Education Administration in collaboration with the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CY.C.E.R.E) of the Holy Bishopry of Limassol.
The following agents also participated in the organizing of the Conference:     

  • Environmental Education Research group of the University of Cyprus
  • School of Education of the Frederick University
  • Department of Science and Technology of the Cyprus Technological University
  • Cyprus Biological Society
  • Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association – CYMEPA

During the Conference Greetings were addressed by the Environment Commissioner Ms. Ioanna Panayiotou, the President of the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education Bishop of Amathus. fr. Nicolaos, the Assistant Professor of Environmental Sciences of the School of Education of the Frederick University Dr. Chrisanthi Katzi,  the  Associate Professor and President of the Department of  Environmental Management of the School of Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management Dr. Costas Costa, the President of the Biological Society of Cyprus mr. Mikis Chajineophytou, the General Secretary of CYMEPA Dr. Michalis Ierides and the Principal of the coordinating school of Agias Phylaxeos Lycium Mr. Stylianos Tsiakkaris.

Declaring the start of the Conference was done on behalf of the Minister of Education and Culture by mr. Ioannis Efthimiou, Deputy Director of Secondary Education. A central suggestion was made by the Assistant Professor of Environmental Education of the Department of Education of the University of Cyprus Dr. Kostas Korfiatis.
