The 2nd celebration of the World Wetlands Day was held on January 29, 2006 at the premises of the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education, in the farm of St. Nikolaos, at Akrotiri.
The program included a greeting from the Honorary President of the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education – Bishop of Limassol Mr. Athanasios, an introductory speech about the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education by Dr. Andreas Hadjihambis, a greeting from Dr. Aravella Zaccaria – representative of the Minister of Education and Culture Mr. Pefkios Georgiades, a greeting by the member of the parliament Mr. George Perdikis – representative of the Cyprus Green Party, a greeting from the President of the Cyprus Federation of Environmental and Ecological Organisations – Mr. Panteli Metaxa, a presentation having as its topic “Wetlands: Importance, threats, management actions with the support of the program LIFE-Nature” by the biologist Katerina Kari, a speech focusing on «The Ramsar Convention and its importance for the wetlands in Cyprus» by the Environment Agency Officer Mr. Dimitris Koutroukidis and finally a symbolic tree planting.
